ELDER PAISIOS-DREAMS CAN BE DECEPTIVE

-Elder,I'm tormented by some unpleasant dreams...

-When you have a bad dream, never examine what you saw,how you saw it, or whether you're guilty or how much you may be at fault. The evil one, having failed to tempt you during the daytime, comes to you at night.Sometimes God permits the devil to tempt us in our sleep,so that we may see that the old self has not entirely died.Other times, the enemy approaches a person in his sleep and presents various dreams in order to upset him when he awakes. This is why you shouldn't pay any attention to them.Cross yourself and the pillow, place a cross and an icon on your pillow, and say the Jesus Prayer until you fall asleep. The more importance you attach to such dreams, the more the enemy will come to disturb you. This is something that happens to children, too, even though they are little angels. The enemy comes and scares them in their sleep, and they wake up frightened, running into their mother's arms.Often times, they are approached by Angels who make them smile in their sleep out of joy,or they may wake up from their great joy.As such, dreams brought about by temptations are an external influence of the enemy upon man while he's asleep.

-Elder,what about feeling a certain burden while you're sleeping?

-Sometimes this comes from a stressful situation that one has experienced during the day,or from various fears, various suspicions and so forth.Naturally, the little devil can take advantage of this, forming confusing combinations in order to make the person feel dizzy.Often we sleep so lightly that we may think that we are awake and praying for this unbearably heavy burden to go away.
Once in a while the devil may take the form of a human or of a saint and appear to someone in his sleep.Once he appeared in the form of Saint Arsenios to a sick man who was sleeping and told him,"I am Saint Arsenios;I have come to tell you that you will die.Do you hear me?You will die!"The man was frightened and horrified.A Saint never speaks to a sick person like that. And even if a sick person is about to die and a Saint appears to inform him about his death,he will do so gently and kindly:"God sees how much you are suffering here and this is why he has decided to take you out of this world.See that you prepare yourself."He will never say,"Do you hear me?You will die!"

-Elder,what happens when someone cries out in his sleep?

-It's good,he wakes up...Many dreams are due to worry. When someone is worrying over things or when he is very tired, these things are struggling inside him and he sees them in his dreams. It happens often to me,too;when I deal with various people and their problems during the day, such as unfairness and so on.I later find myself scolding the unjust ones in my sleep:"You godless man, have you no feelings?" and I wake up because of my yelling.

-Elder,can someone foresee something that will happen to him from the dreams he has?

-No,don't pay any attention to dreams.Whether they are pleasant or unpleasant, you are not to pay any attention to them, because there is the danger of being deluded.Ninety five percent of dreams are deceptive. This is why the Holy Fathers say that we should not pay any attention to them.Very few dreams are from God,but in order for someone to interpret even these,he must have purity and other prerequisites, much like Righteous Joseph and the Prophet Daniel in the bible, who both had the gift from God.Daniel said to Nabuchadnezzar,I will tell you what dream you had and what it means. But consider the spiritual maturity he had attained! He was in the den of lions.and they, even though they were hungry, did not hurt him.Habbakuk brought him food and Daniel said,"Has God remembered me?"If God didn't remember the Prophet Daniel in the lions den, whom would He remember?

-Elder,some people don't have any dreams.

-It is better that they don't!But by dreaming,of course, people spend no money for tickets or fuel!In our dreams we can see in an instant something that in reality would take hours, even days, because the concept of time is abolished. This is where one can understand the verse from he psalm:For a thousand years in Thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past.

Beware of Visions

-Elder,What should we say when people come and tell us of visions or of saints they have seen?

-It is better to tell them to be cautious. This is safer, because not everyone can discern if a vision is from God or from the devil.Even if a vision is from God,one should not really accept it.After all,God is moved,in a sense, when He sees His creature not accepting the vision immediately, because this indicates humility. If indeed a Saint appeared in a vision,God would surely find another way to inform the soul and guide it to the desirable purpose. We must be careful and aware that it is possible for the devil to come, press the button and turn on the "television"...

There was a soul who had not received help from people, and for this reason she was entitled to divine help.God revealed something to her in order to help her.But then the devil put some thoughts in her head:"It seems that God has something more sublime in store for you,who knows?Otherwise, why would He have endowed you with that vision?"From the moment she believed this, the devil started his work and controlled her!But in the end,God had pity on her and helped her again. She had a vision and heard a voice telling her,"Write to Father Paisios and tell him all the visions you have seen."So she wrote me a letter relating all the visions she had had.The tempter, the devil, had really confused her. They were real visions;but they were all from the tempter.Of all the visions she had related, only the first and the last were from God.The last one was permitted by God to help her come to her senses and to be rid of the deception. In the end,the poor woman took heart what I told her,and she was freed.

Counsels οf Saint Seraphim οf Vyritsa

Saint Seraphim οf Vyritsa

* The Lord has the power to show forth workers if we beseech Him. Let's pray and let's beg Him and then from the rocks, the Lord will show forth His chosen ones.
* At least once in our life we must light a candle for those whom we insulted, whom we deceived, whom we stole something from, whom we owed, and whom we did not pay our debt.
* When some people would complain to the Elder that they were being slandered, he would say: "Let the others say ugly words about us. We should try to make everything good."
* The Elder used to say that a time would come when near every believer would be forty unbelievers and they would beg him to save them.
* The Lord can wait even a thousand years for just one person to be saved for the number of angels who fell [i.e. the demons] to be made up.
* Even in the most difficult times, he who will occupy himself diligently with the Jesus prayer, ascending with the frequent invocation of the Son of God's name in ceaseless prayer, will be able to be easily saved.
*The Elder many times used to say that the Christian should, of course, pray for his enemies. More specifically, he used to say the following: "Of course we should pray for our enemies. If we don't pray, it's as if we are throwing gasoline οn fire and the flame becomes constantly bigger!Always give thanks to the Lord and the Panagia(Mother Of God) for everything, even for the afflictions. "
* There will come a time when not the persecutions but money and the goods of this world will take people far from God. Then many more souls will be lost than in the time of the persecutions.

Οn the one hand, they will be putting gold οn the domes and will put the crosses οn them and, οn the other hand, everywhere evil and falsehood will reign. The true Church always will be persecuted. They who want to be saved will be saved with illnesses and afflictions. The way in which the persecutions will occur will be very sly and it will be very difficult for one to foresee the persecutions. Dreadful will be that time ; Ι pity those who will be living then.
* The Elder loved the youth very much. Then the young people didn't go to church almost at all and the Elder rejoiced very much when they would visit him. Father Seraphim used to say that the role of the youth will be very great in the future revival of the ecclesiastical life. He also used to say that there will come a time when corruption and lewdness among the youth will reach the utmost point. There will hardly be any virgin youth left. They will see their lack of punishment and will think that everything is allowable for them to satisfy their desires. God will call them, however, and they will realize that it will not be possible for them to continue such a life. Then in various ways they will be led tο God. In many people there will be a tendency towards the ascetic life. They who formerly were sinners and alcoholics will fill the churches and they will feel great thirst for the spiritual life. Many will become monastics. The monasteries will open and the churches will be full of believers. The young will go οn ρilgrimages tο the holy lands. That time will be beautiful. That today they are sinning greatly, will lead them tο a deeper repentance. Just like the candle before it goes out, it shines strongly and throws sparks; with its light, it enlightens the surrounding darkness; thus, it will be the Church's life in the last age. And that time is near.
* After the end of the second World War, the Elder said tο a spiritual child of his: " There will come a time when from the church of Αll Ηοly Virgin Mary of Kazan till the Lavra of Saint Alexander, there will be a litany. Υοu will see it." Αt that time it was difficult for one tο believe it and today this has become a reality. The Orthodox of Russia remember the procession of Saint Seraphim of Sarov's precious relics in the roads of Saint Petersburg. The procession went from the Αll Ηοly Virgin Mary of Kazan church tο Saint Alexander Nevsky Lavra.

*Χωρίς πειρασμούς η πρόνοια του Θεού για τον άνθρωπο δε φανερώνεται, και είναι αδύνατο, χωρίς αυτούς, να αποκτήσεις παρρησία στο Θεό, και να μάθεις τη σοφία του αγίου Πνεύματος και, ακόμη, δε θα μπορέσει να στεριωθεί μέσα στην ψυχή σου ο θεϊκός πόθος. Προτού να έρθουν οι πειρασμοί, ο άνθρωπος προσεύχεται στο Θεό σαν ξένος. Από τότε όμως που θα εισέλθει σε πειρασμούς για την αγάπη του Θεού, και δεν αλλάξει γνώμη, έχει το Θεό, να πούμε, υποχρεωμένο απέναντί του, και ο Θεός τον λογαριάζει για γνήσιο φίλο του. Διότι πολέμησε και νίκησε τον εχθρό του, για να εκπληρώσει το θέλημα του Θεού.

*Ο Θεός δεν δίνει μεγάλο χάρισμα χωρίς να προηγηθεί μεγάλος πειρασμός γιατί ανάλογα με την σφοδρότητα των πειρασμών ορίσθηκαν τα χαρίσματα από τη σοφία του Θεού, την οποία όμως δεν καταλαβαίνουν συνήθως οι άνθρωποι. Από το μέγεθος των μεγάλων θλίψεων που σου στέλνει η πρόνοια του Θεού, καταλαβαίνεις πόση τιμή σου κάνει η μεγαλοσύνη του. Διότι ανάλογη με τη λύπη που δοκιμάζεις είναι και η παρηγοριά που δέχεσαι.

*Αν με ρωτήσεις ποια είναι η αιτία για όλα αυτά, σου απαντώ: Η αμέλεια σου. γιατί δε φρόντισες να βρεις τη γιατρειά τους. Η γιατρειά όλων αυτών είναι μία, και μ' αυτή ο άνθρωπος βρίσκει αμέσως στην ψυχή του την παρηγοριά που ποθεί. Και ποια λοιπόν είναι αυτή η γιατρειά; Είναι η ταπεινοφροσύνη της καρδιάς. Χωρίς αυτήν είναι αδύνατο να χαλάσεις το φράχτη των πειρασμών. απεναντίας μάλιστα βρίσκεις ότι οι πειρασμοί είναι ισχυρότεροι και σε εξουθενώνουν....

* Κατά το μέτρο της ταπεινοφροσύνης, σου δίνει ο Θεός και τη δύναμη να υπομένεις τις συμφορές σου. Και κατά το μέτρο της υπομονής σου, το βάρος των θλίψεών σου γίνεται ελαφρό και, έτσι, παρηγοριέσαι. Και όσο παρηγοριέσαι, τόσο η αγάπη σου προς το Θεό αυξάνει. Και όσο αγαπάς το Θεό, τόσο μεγαλώνει η χαρά που σου χαρίζει το άγιο Πνεύμα. Ο εύσπλαχνος Πατέρας μας, θέλοντας να βγάλει σε καλό τους πειρασμούς των πραγματικών του παιδιών, δεν τους παίρνει, παρά τους δίνει τη δύναμη να τους υπομείνουν. Όλα αυτά τα αγαθά (την παρηγοριά, την αγάπη, τη χαρά) τη δέχονται οι αγωνιστές ως καρπό της υπομονής, για να φτάσουν οι ψυχές τους στην τελειότητα. Εύχομαι ο Χριστός και Θεός μας να μας αξιώσει με τη χάρη του να υπομένουμε την πίκρα των πειρασμών για την αγάπη του και με ευχαριστίες της καρδιάς μας. Αμήν.
                                                        *  *  *
*Οι άγιοι δείχνουν έμπρακτα την αγάπη τους στο Θεό με όσα υποφέρουν για το όνομά του, όταν δηλ. τους στέλνει στενοχώριες, χωρίς όμως να απομακρύνεται απ' αυτούς, γιατί τους αγαπά. Απ' αυτή την πάσχουσα αγάπη τους αποκτά η καρδιά τους παρρησία, ώστε να ατενίζουν προς αυτόν ελεύθερα και με την πεποίθηση ότι θα εισακουσθούν τα αιτήματά τους και θα εκπληρωθούν. Μεγάλη είναι η δύναμη της προσευχής που έχει παρρησία. Γι' αυτό αφήνει ο Θεός τους αγίους του να δοκιμάσουν κάθε λύπη, για να αποκτήσουν πείρα και να βεβαιωθούν για τη βοήθειά του και για το πόσο προνοεί και νοιάζεται γι' αυτούς. Έτσι, αποκτούν σοφία και σύνεση από τους πειρασμούς, για να μη γίνουν αμαθείς, καθώς θα τους λείπει η πνευματική άσκηση και στο καλό και στο κακό, και για να αποκτήσουν, από τη δοκιμασία τους, τη γνώση όλων των πραγμάτων που χρειάζονται. γιατί, αλλιώς, θα παρασυρθούν από άγνοια και θα γίνουν καταγέλαστοι από τους δαίμονες. Διότι, αν γυμνάζονταν μόνο στα καλά και δεν είχαν την εμπειρία της πάλης με το κακό, θα πήγαιναν στον πόλεμο εντελώς άπειροι....

*Ο άνθρωπος δεν μπορεί να γευθεί και να εκτιμήσει το καλό, αν προηγουμένως δε δοκιμάσει την πίκρα από τους πειρασμούς....

*Οι άνθρωποι τότε έρχονται σε αληθινή επίγνωση, όταν ο Θεός τους στερήσει τη δύναμή του και τους κάνει να συναισθανθούν την ανθρώπινη αδυναμία, και τη δυσκολία που προκαλούν οι πειρασμοί, και την πονηριά του εχθρού, και με ποιον αντίπαλο έχουν να παλέψουν, και πόσο ασθενής είναι η ανθρώπινη φύση τους, και πώς τους φυλάει η θεϊκή δύναμη, και πόσο προχώρησαν και προόδευσαν στην αρετή, και ότι χωρίς τη δύναμη του Θεού είναι ανίσχυροι μπροστά σε οποιοδήποτε πάθος. Κι αυτό το κάνει ο Θεός, για να αποκτήσουν, από όλες αυτές τις αρνητικές εμπειρίες, αληθινή ταπείνωση, και να πλησιάσουν κοντά του, και να περιμένουν τη βέβαιη βοήθειά του, και να προσεύχονται με υπομονή. Και όλα αυτά από που θα τα μάθουν, παρά από την πείρα των πολλών θλίψεων τις οποίες επιτρέπει ο Θεός και δοκιμάζουν; Αλλά και πίστη σταθερή αποκτά κανείς από τους πειρασμούς καθώς βεβαιώνεται για τη θεϊκή βοήθεια, που πολλές φορές βρίσκει στον αγώνα του....

*Οι αγωνιστές, λοιπόν, πειράζονται για να αυξήσουν τον πνευματικό τους πλούτο. οι αμελείς, για να φυλαχθούν απ' ό,τι τους βλάπτει. οι κοιμισμένοι, για να ξυπνήσουν. οι απομακρυσμένοι, για να πλησιάσουν στο Θεό. και οι φίλοι του Θεού, για να εισέλθουν στον άγιο οίκο του με παρρησία. Ένας γιος, άβγαλτος στη ζωή, δεν μπορεί να διαχειρισθεί τον πλούτο του πατέρα του και να βοηθηθεί απ' αυτόν. Γι' αυτό λοιπόν, στην αρχή στέλνει δυσκολίες και βάσανα ο Θεός στα παιδιά του και, μετά, τους φανερώνει τι τους χαρίζει. Δόξα τω Θεώ που, με πικρά φάρμακα, μας χαρίζει την απόλαυση της πνευματικής υγείας.

*Είναι κανείς που δε στενοχωριέται και δεν κουράζεται, ενόσω γυμνάζεται; Και είναι κανείς, στον οποίο να μη φαίνεται πικρός ο καιρός, που πίνει το φαρμάκι των πειρασμών και των θλίψεων; Χωρίς, λοιπόν, να περάσει απ' αυτό το στάδιο δεν μπορεί να αποκτήσει ισχυρή κράση. Αλλά και η υπομονή στους πειρασμούς δεν είναι δική μας. Πώς μπορεί, αλήθεια, ο άνθρωπος, ένα πήλινο αγγείο, να βαστάζει μέσα του το νερό, αν δε το κάνει στέρεο η θεϊκή φωτιά; Αν σκύψουμε το κεφάλι, τότε ό,τι καλό και ωφέλιμο ζητήσουμε από το Θεό στην προσευχή μας με ταπείνωση, με διαρκή πόθο και με υπομονή, όλα θα μας τα δώσει.

*Όπως τα μικρά παιδιά τρομάζουν από τα φοβερά θεάματα, και τρέχουν και πιάνονται από τα φορέματα των γονέων τους, και ζητούν τη βοήθειά τους, έτσι και η ψυχή: όσο στενοχωριέται και θλίβεται από το φόβο των πειρασμών, προστρέχει και κολλάει στο Θεό, και τον παρακαλεί με ακατάπαυτες δεήσεις. Και όσο οι πειρασμοί πέφτουν επάνω της, ο ένας μετά τον άλλο, τόσο και παρακαλεί περισσότερο. Αλλά όταν σταματήσουν και ξαναβρεί την ανάπαυσή της, συνήθως χάνει την επαφή της με την πραγματικότητα και απομακρύνεται από το Θεό.

*Οι θλίψεις και οι κίνδυνοι θανατώνουν την ηδυπάθεια, ενώ η καλοπέραση και η αδιαφορία την τρέφουν. Γι' αυτό και ο Θεός και οι άγιοι Άγγελοι χαίρονται στις θλίψεις και στις στενοχώριες μας, ενώ ο διάβολος και οι συνεργάτες του χαίρονται όταν τεμπελιάζουμε και καλοπερνούμε.

*Άφησε λοιπόν τη φροντίδα σου στο Θεό, και σε όλες τις δυσκολίες σου κατάκρινε τον εαυτό σου, ότι εσύ ο ίδιος είσαι ο αίτιος για όλα...

*Όλες οι λυπηρές περιστάσεις και οι θλίψεις, αν δεν έχουμε υπομονή, μας διπλοβασανίζουν. Γιατί ο άνθρωπος με την υπομονή του διώχνει την πίκρα των συμφορών, ενώ η μικροψυχία γεννά την απελπισία της κόλασης. Η υπομονή είναι μητέρα της παρηγοριάς. είναι μια δύναμη ψυχική, που γεννιέται από την πλατιά καρδιά. Αυτή τη δύναμη ο άνθρωπος δύσκολα τη βρίσκει πάνω στις θλίψεις του, αν δεν έχει τη θεία χάρη, που την αποκτά με την επίμονη προσευχή και με δάκρυα.

St.Isaac the Syrian-On The proper way to face sorrows

Just as the eyebrows approach each other, so are the temptations close to men. It was the economy of God to be so, with wisdom that we may receive benefit: namely, through knocking persistently, because of the sorrows, on the door of God's mercy and to enter into your mind, due to the fear of grievous events, the seed of memory of God, so that you may approach Him with supplications and your heart be sanctified through the continuous remembrance of Him. And while you ask Him, He will listen.
  • The person walking the road of God must thank Him for all the sorrows that he faces, and to accuse and dishonor his negligent self, and know that the Lord who loves and looks after him, would not have allowed the grievous things to happen to wake his mind up, if he had somehow not been negligent. God may have allowed some sorrow because man has become proud and consequently he should understand and let him not become disturbed but find the cause within himself, so that the affliction may not double up, namely suffer and not wish to be treated. "In God who is the source of justice there is no injustice". May we not think otherwise.
  • Do not avoid the sorrows, because being helped by them you learn the truth and love of God well. And do not fear the temptations (negative experiences) for through them you discover treasures. Pray that you may not enter into spiritual temptations, while for the bodily ones, prepare to face them with all your strength, for without them you cannot approach God. Through them comes the divine rest. Whoever avoids the bodily temptations avoids virtue.
  • Without temptations the providence of God for man does not manifest itself, and it is impossible without them to receive the boldness in God and learn the wisdom of the Holy Spirit and moreover, it will not be possible to anchor the divine love in your soul. Before the arrival of temptations, man prays to God as a stranger. From the moment however he enters into temptations for the love of God and does not change opinion, let's say, he has God duty bound towards him and God considers him a genuine friend. For he fought and conquered the enemy, to fulfill the will of God.
  • God does not grant any big grace without a big temptation preceding it, for according to the severity of the temptations the graces were ordained by the wisdom of God, which however men normally do not understand. By the measure of the great sorrows that the providence of God sends you, you understand the great value that His magnanimity grants you. For according to the sorrow you experience is the consolation you will receive.
  • If you ask me what is the reason for all these, I will answer you: your negligence, for you did not bother to find the cure. The cure of all of them is one, and with it man's soul finds immediately the consolation it longs for. But what is the cure? "It is the humility of the heart". Without it, it is impossible to destroy the fence of temptations, in the contrary in fact you will discover that the temptations become stronger and weaken you.....
  • According to the level of humility, God gives you the strength to endure calamities. And according to the measure of your patience, the weight of your sorrows becomes light and so you are consoled. And as you are consoled so does your love for God increases. And as much as you love God that much greater joy the Holy Spirit bestows on you. Our compassionate God wishing to bring the temptation of His true children to a good end, does not take but instead gives them the strength to endure. "All these gifts (consolation, love, joy) the strugglers acquire as fruit of their patience" for their souls to arrive at perfection. I wish our Christ and God to make us worthy through His grace to endure the bitterness of temptations for His love and with gratitude of our heart. Amen.
  • The saints show their love to God indeed, by their suffering in His name when for example He sends them sorrows without however distancing from them, for He loves them. Through this suffering love their heart obtains Boldness, so that they may approach Him freely and with conviction that their supplications will be heard and realized. The power of prayer that has boldness is great. That is why He allows His saints to experience every sorrow and acquire experience and be assured of His help and how much He provides and cares for them. This way they acquire wisdom and good sense from temptations, that they may not become negligent, that they may not lack spiritual asceticism on both good and bad, and thus receive through their trials, the knowledge of all things they would need. For otherwise they will be swept away by ignorance and will become the mockery of demons. For if they exercised only in the good things and had no experience of struggles with the evil, they would have gone to war totally unprepared......
  • Man cannot taste and value the good, if previously he did not experience the bitterness of the temptations....
  • Men come to the true knowledge, when God deprives them of His power and makes them to co-experience the human weakness and the difficulty that temptations cause, the cunningness of the enemy, and what adversary they have to fight and how much they have advanced and progressed in virtue and that without the power of God they are weak towards any passion. God does this, that they may receive from all these negative experiences, true humility and to approach close to Him and wait for His certain help and to pray with patience. So where could they learn all these but through the experience of many sorrows which He allows for them to experience? For this way one acquires stable faith through these sorrows while he is assured of the divine help that he many times receives during his struggles.
  • The strugglers therefore, are tempted that they may increase their spiritual wealth, the negligent though to protect themselves from whatever hurts them, the slumberous that they may be awakened, the distant ones that they may approach God and the friends of God that they may enter His Holy Abode with boldness. A son inexperienced in life cannot manage the wealth of his father and help him. For this, in the beginning God sends difficulties and hardships to His children and then He reveals His gifts. Like little children become frightened of scary sights and run, grabbing at their dress of their parents and ask for their help, so does the soul; the more upset and saddened by the fear of temptation the more it runs and clings on God and begs Him with unceasing supplications. And as temptations fall on it, one after the other, that much more it prays. However, when they stop and it recovers its comforts, normally it loses touch with reality and distances from God.
  • The sorrows and dangers kill sensuality, while good times and indifference feed it. For this both God and the holy Angels are joyful in our sorrows, while the devil and his accomplices are joyful when we are lazy and have a good time.
  • Leave your cares to God and in all your difficulties judge yourself, for you, yourself is the cause for all .....
  • All the sad occasions and sorrows will torment us doubly if we have no patience. For with patience man turns away the bitterness of afflictions, while pusillanimity gives birth to the despair of hell. Patience is the mother of consolation; it is spiritual power that is born of a broad heart. It is difficult for man to find this power during sorrows, if he does not have the divine grace, which he acquires through persistent prayers and with tears.

The Afflicted Should Be Guided Slowly To Repentance

          From the Gerontikon:

A brother fell to temptation; that is, to sin. So great was the sorrow that he suffered, that he abandoned his monastic rule. And though he wanted in principle to repent, he was impeded from so doing by his sorrow, saying within himself: "How can I restore myself to what I was before?" Being thus remiss and negligent, he did not have the power to take up his monastic work.

So, he visited an Elder and confessed all that had befallen him.

The Elder, on listening to the matters which were tormenting the monk, related the following example to him in the form of an instructive parable:

A man, he began by saying, had a field. On account of his neglect of it, it became fallow and was overrun by weeds and brambles. After some time, this man thought about attending to his field and cultivating it. So, he ordered his son to clean up the field; but as soon as he saw that it was full of thorns, he was discouraged and said to himself: "I would never be able to uproot all that and to clean this field." So he lay down and went to sleep.

After a bit, he awakened and, gazing again on the vast number of brambles, became depressed by it all and lay on the ground - sometimes sleeping and sometimes rolling over from one side, the way a door swings on its hinge, as in the proverb: "As the door turneth upon its hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed. The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth" (Proverbs 26:14-16). He spent several days thusly, without working and inactive.

In the meantime, his father came along to check what he had done to the field. Finding his son idle and indecisive, he said to him:

"Why have you done nothing up to now, my child?"

The son answered:

"Father, as soon as I started to work and saw this mass of wild weeds and brambles, I lost my desire to work, lay down, and fell asleep. And so right up to today I have still done nothing."

"Do not worry, my son," the father replied, "every day you can clear an area the width of your bed, and thus your work will progress without inactivity crushing you."

Indeed, the son followed his father's advice and in a short time had cleaned the field of brambles and weeds.

"And in this way, my brother, you can work little by little, without risking the danger of being negligent. And God, seeing your desire to work, will restore you to your former rank."

The monk carefully listened to these suggestions, persisted with patience, and applied the directions of the Elder.

And indeed, by the Grace of God, he attained to the peace which he had sought.

Σκανδαλίζονται πολλές φορές οι πιστοί από την ευτυχία των ασεβών και των απίστων. Πραγματικά, όταν ρίξωμε ένα βλέμμα γύρω μας, θα δούμε ότι ο Θεός, κατά την ανθρώπινη λογική, πολύ άδικα μοιράζει τα αγαθά του. Εκεί, όπου θα έπρεπε να δίνη ευτυχίες δίνει δυστυχίες. Εκεί, όπου θα έπρεπε να δίνη πλούτον, δίνει φτώχεια και εκεί, όπου θα έπρεπε να δώση φτώχεια, δίνει πλούτο. ΄Οταν περιμένωμε να μας ευλογήση, τότε μας δίνει ένα χτύπημα δυνατό, ενώ ταυτοχρόνως άλλους τους διατηρεί σ΄ ένα διαρκές χαμόγελο. Θα λέγαμε, χρησιμοποιώντας μια σύγχρονη φράση, ότι ο Θεός διαρκώς κάνει διακρίσεις. Σκανδαλιζόμαστε από αυτό. Γιατί άραγε;

- Γέροντα, ή πτώση σε μιά αμαρτία μπορεί να γίνη κατά παραχώρηση του Θεού;

Saint Herman of Alaska -On Love For God

Once the Elder was invited on board a frigate that had come from St. Petersburg. The captain of the frigate was a man quite learned, highly educated; he had been sent to America by Imperial command to inspect all the colonies. With the captain were some 25 officers, likewise educated men. In this company there sat a desert-dwelling monk of small stature, in an old garment, who by his wise conversation brought all his listeners to such a state that they did not know how to answer him. The captain himself related: "We were speechless fools before him!"

Father Herman gave them all one common question: "What do you, gentlemen, love above all, and what would each of you wish for his happiness?" Diverse answers followed. One desired wealth, one glory, one a beautiful wife, one a fine ship which he should command, and so on in this fashion. "Is it not true," said Father Herman at this, "that all your various desires can be reduced to one - that each of you desires that which, in his understanding, he considers best and most worthy of love?" "Yes, it is so," they all replied. "Well, then, tell me," he continued, "can there be anything better, higher above everything, more surpassing everything and in general more worthy of love, than our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, who created us, perfectly adorned us, gave life to all, supports all, nourishes and loves all, who Himself is love and more excellent than all men? Should not a person then love God high above all and desire and seek Him more than all else?" All began to say: "Well, yes! That is understood! That speaks for itself!"

"And do you love God?" the Elder then asked. All replied: "Of course, we love God. How can one not love God?" "And I, sinful one, for more than forty years have been striving to love God, and cannot say that I perfectly love Him," answered Father Herman; then he began to show how a person should love God. "If we love someone," he said, "we always think of him, strive to please him, day and night our heart is occupied with this subject. Is it thus that you, gentlemen, love God? Do you often turn to Him, do you always think of Him, do you always pray to Him, and fulfill His holy commandments?" It had to be acknowledged that they did not! "For our good, for our happiness," concluded the Elder, "at least let us make a promise to ourselves, that from this day, from this hour, from this very moment we shall strive to love God above all, and fulfill His holy will!"

Behold what an intelligent, superb conversation Father Herman conducted in society; without doubt this conversation must have imprinted itself on the hearts of his listeners for their whole life!
