Saint( Elder) Porphyrios-What is the Church?

 Saint (Elder) Porphyrios

“The Church is without beginning, without end and eternal, just as the Triune God, her founder, is without beginning, without end and eternal. She is uncreated just as God is uncreated. She existed before the ages, before the angels, before the creation of the world – before the foundation of the world, as the Apostle Paul says (Eph. 1:4). She is a divine institution and in her dwells the whole fullness of divinity (Col. 2:9). She is an expression of the richly varied wisdom of God. She is the mystery of mysteries. She was concealed and was revealed in the last of times. The Church remains unshaken because she is rooted in the love and wise providence of God.
The three Persons of the Trinity constitute the eternal Church. The angels and human beings existed in the thought and love of the Triune God from the beginning. We human beings were not born now, we existed before the ages in God’s omniscience.
The love of God created us in His image and likeness. He embraced us within the Church in spite of the fact that He knew of our apostasy. He gave us everything to make us gods too through the free gift of grace. For all that, we made poor use of our freedom and lost our original beauty, our original righteousness, and cut ourselves off from the Church. Outside the Church, far from the Holy Trinity, we lost Paradise, everything. But outside the Church there is no salvation, there is no life. And so that compassionate heart of God the Father did not leave us exiled from His love. He opened again for us the gates of Paradise in the last of times and appeared in the flesh.
With the divine incarnation of the only-begotten Son of God, God’s pre-eternal plan for the salvation of mankind was revealed again to men. In his epistle to Timothy the Apostle Paul says, ‘Incontrovertibly, the mystery of faith is great. God was revealed in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among Gentiles, believed in throughout the world, taken up in glory’ (1 Tim. 3:16). The words of the Apostle Paul are dense in meaning: divine, heavenly words!
God in His infinite love united us again with His Church in the person of Christ. On entering into the uncreated Church, we come to Christ, we enter the realm of the uncreated. We the faithful are called to become uncreated by grace, to become participants in the divine energies of God, to enter into the mystery of divinity, to surpass our worldly frame of mind, to die to the ‘old man,’ and to become immersed in God. (Cf. Col. 3:9, Rom. 6:6, Eph. 4:22) When we live in the Church, we live by Christ. This is a very fine-drawn matter, we cannot understand it. Only the Holy Spirit can teach us.
The head of the Church is Christ and we humans, we Christians, are the body. The Apostle Paul says: He is the head of the body, of the Church. (Col 1:18)
The Church and Christ are one. The body cannot exist without its head. The body of the Church is nourished, sanctified and lives with Christ. He is the Lord, omnipotent, omniscient, everywhere present and filling all things, our staff, our friend, our brother: the pillar and sure foundation of the Church. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, the basis – everything. Without Christ the Church does not exist. Christ is the Bridegroom; each individual soul is the Bride.
Christ united the body of the Church with heaven and with earth: with angels, men and all created things, with all of God’s creation with the animals and birds, with each tiny wild flower and each microscopic insect. The Church thus became the fullness of Him who fills all in all, (Eph. 1:23) that is, of Christ. Everything is in Christ and with Christ. This is the mystery of the Church.
Christ is revealed in that unity between His love and ourselves: the Church. On my own I am not the Church, but together with you. All together we are the Church. All are incorporated in the Church. We are all one and Christ is the head. One body, one body of Christ: You are the body of Christ and individually members of it. (1 Cor. 12:27) We are all one because God is our Father and is everywhere. When we experience this we are in the Church. This is our Lord’s wish for all the members of the Church as expressed in His great high-priestly prayer: that they may be one. (John 17:11,22) But that’s something you can only understand through grace. We experience the joy of unity, of love, and we become one with everyone. There is nothing more magnificent!
The important thing is for us to enter into the Church – to unite ourselves with our fellow men, with the joys and sorrows of each and everyone, to feel that they are our own, to pray for everyone, to have care for their salvation, to forget about ourselves, to do everything for them just as Christ did for us. In the Church we become one unfortunate, suffering and sinful soul.
No one should wish to be saved alone without all others being save. It is a mistake for someone to pray for himself, that he himself may be saved. We must love others and pray that no soul be lost, that all may enter into the Church. That is what counts. And it is with this desire one should leave the world to retire to a monastery or to the desert.
When we set ourselves apart from others, we are not Christians. We are true Christians when we have a profound sense that we are members of the mystical body of Christ, of the Church, in an unbroken relationship of love – when we live united in Christ, that is, when we experience unity in His Church with a sense of oneness. This is why Christ prays to His Father saying, that they may be one. He repeats the prayer again and again and the apostles emphasise it everywhere. This is the most profound aspect, the most exalted meaning, of the Church. This is where the secret is to be found: for all to be united as one person in God. There is no other religion like this; no other religion says anything of this sort. They have something to say, but not this mystery, this exquisite point of the mystery which Christ demands and tells us that this is how we must become, that he wants us to be His.
We are one even with those who are not close to the Church. They are distant on account of ignorance. We must pray that God will enlighten them and change them so that they too may come to Christ. We see things in a human light, we move on a different plane and imagine that we love Christ. But Christ, who sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous, (Matt. 5 :45) tells us: Love your enemies (Matt. 5:44). We need to pray that we may all be united, united in God. Then, if we live out this prayer, we will achieve corresponding results; we will all be united in love.
For the people of God there is no such thing as distance, even if they be thousands of miles apart. However far away our fellow human beings may be, we must stand by them. Some people regularly telephone me from a town on the edge of the Indian Ocean – Durban is what it’s called, if I am pronouncing it correctly. It’s in South Africa, two hours drive from Johannesburg. Indeed, a few days ago they came here. They were taking a sick person to England and they came here first to ask me to read a prayer. I was very moved.
When Christ unites us, distances don’t exist. When I leave this life it will be better. I’ll be closer to you.”

Lust, Born from Thoughts

“A brother overcome by lust went to see a great old man and besought him, saying, ‘Be so good as to pray for me, for I am overcome by lust.’ And the old man prayed to God for him. A second time he went to the old man and said the same thing, and once more the old man did not omit to beseech God for him, saying, ‘Lord, reveal to me the manner of life of this brother and whence comes this action of the devil, for I have already besought you and he has not found peace’. Then God revealed this to him about the brother: he saw him sitting with the spirit of lust beside him and an angel, sent to his aid, was standing beside him and becoming angry with him because he did not fall down before God but, taking pleasure in his thoughts, delivered up his spirit completely to the action of the devil. So the old man knew that the cause came from the brother, and he told him, ‘It is you who are consenting to your thoughts.’ Then he taught him how to resist thoughts, and the brother, restored by the old man’s prayer and teaching, found rest.”

Saint Nikolai Velimirovich-God Hears Only Fervent Prayer

“Prayer consisting of words alone does not help if the heart does not participate in prayer. God hears only a fervent prayer. Abba Zoilus of Thebaid was once returning from Mt. Sinai and met a monk who complained to him, that they are suffering much from drought in the monastery. Zoilus said to him: ‘Why don’t you pray and implore God?’ The monk replied: ‘We have prayed and have implored, but there is no rain.’ To this, Zoilus replied: ‘It is evident that you are not praying fervently. Do you want to be convinced that it is so?’ Having said this, the elder raised his hands to heaven and prayed. Abundant rain fell to the earth. Seeing this, the astonished monk fell to the ground and bowed before the elder, but the elder, fearing the glory of men, quickly fled. The Lord Himself said: ‘Ask and it will be given you’ (St. Luke 11:9). In vain are mouths full of prayer if the heart is empty. God does not stand and listen to the mouth but to the heart. Let the heart be filled with prayer even though the mouth might be silent. God will hear and will receive the prayer. For God only listens to a fervent prayer.”

ELDER AIMILIANOS-On The State That Jesus Confers

If you wish to see God, my beloved children, there's only one thing to do:go to church filled with longing to see His face, filled with divine and heavenly desire to be able, somehow,to feel the presence of your Helper and Defender. When you do this, your soul will experience an initially strange feeling;it is God touching your heart. And what will the heart do in response? Will it laugh and rejoice? No.It will be filled with a blessed, godly grief, and begin to weep and lament. In the presence of the Lord, you'll feel your heart-which is like a useless sack-filling to the brim with the sense of its own emptiness and thereby overflowing with tears. And these tears will be its secret cry, saying:Where are You,Lord?Have mercy on me."
"Where are You,Lord?"That is the heart's first cry.But it immediately realizes that it's not able to see God,and that,if it did,it would lose its life(cf.Ex 33.20)correcting its mistake,it continues:"Grant me Your mercy. You are my mercy.Yours is mercy,I am Yours, and You alone can have mercy upon me; You alone can bring me up from the pit of tribulation, from the depths of Your absence and my absence-Your absence from me,and mine from Your own spiritual life."

When the soul begins to cry-and it cries to God,my beloved, very easily indeed, because God,in a sense,is the soul's only surviving relative, and what could be more natural than that it should seek Him,and that it should cry when it realizes that it cannot see Him?When you allow your soul to cry, when you reject everything that cuts off the flow of your tears, then you'll have a feeling of much greater intimacy with God.You'll understand that now someone else governs your life. You'll sense that now someone else has grasped the tiller, someone else has taken hold of the wheel(indeed of your own hands) and is now directly guiding you Himself. You become someone guided by the grace of God.

We are guided by God's grace,to which you can surrender yourself in all confidence.Indeed,it is impossible for you to do the slightest thing without it.Consider the glory of the stars, the magnificence of the heavens, and the wonders of the earth:none of these can give you anything at all.The only thing that can fashion a new heart within you(cf.Ezek 11.19),rendering the old one utterly useless,is the power of God's grace.

When you surrender yourself to God,moreover, your soul will experience three things:contemplation, prayer, and theology.
To begin with, you will contemplate all things in the church spiritually-and you will even be able to do so with your physical eyes, although that kind of seeing is acquired only after many struggles. In the meantime, you contemplate things spiritually.Your eyes have adjusted. The darkness dissipates and the shadows disappear. You contemplate the One Who Is(Ex 3.14) coming towards you.You contemplate the depths of your soul being kneaded by grace, like dough being kneaded into bread.
Your soul is now a malleable lump kneaded by the hands of God.You see your soul being worked on,passing through His fingers, and you're happy,so happy,at being in His hands, and watching them at work.Do you see His Face? Not yet.His back parts?(cf.Ex 33.23)No,for that would require the power and holiness of Moses. All you see is His hand,as we see it in certain icons, emerging from a cloud in order to bless the saint standing below it.And now you are standing next to God.watching His hand as it kneads you soul.

Not only do you contemplate, but you also begin to pray.Whatever you've done up until now, whatever you've said, even if you were praying, was nothing more than childish prattle, the nursery songs and infantile outbursts of your soul(cf.1 Cor 13.11).They were expressions of your ego,and as such did not enable you to ascend to God.But now you are praying, and this prayer is given to you, placed within your heart,by the Holy Spirit,Who intercedes with sighs too deep for words(Rom 8.26).Now grace itself,God Himself, places prayer within your soul,in the mouth of your soul. Now you are praying.

It is terrible to think that even if a man prays in the morning and at night,as much as seven times a day(Ps 118.164).his prayer may remain earth-bound,nothing more than a little jump just a few inches off the ground. How horrifying it is indeed when the words of our prayers are not the words of God,through which alone we are able to pray.

But now we truly pray, because previously we had truly contemplated:our spiritual vision was true. Now we can pray because contemplation unites us with everything. For example, now I see you,and thus I can embrace you.So too do we see the hand of God and take hold of it, so too do we lay hold of His grace. Now we're able to pray to him, because we know Him.Can you speak to an unknown God?What will you say to Him?But now that you see Him kneading your soul in His hands, you can say."Dear God,relax Your grip a little,"or"Dear God,pummel me.because my heart is still like a stone,"or"Stop a bit,Lord,I'm tired," and again,"Take me up,Lord,I can stand it:this is what I want, what I desire."There is so much that you can say,and your words are a prayer, and your prayer becomes theology.
You see,you pray, and you theologize:these are the three things we do when we leave the world and enter the church.

"You Theologize." what does that mean? You begin to think about God,so that, within yourself, you begin to speak about Him.You begin to understand God based on real, experiential knowledge of Him.You become a person who knows God.You theologize. And that means that your words, tempered by knowledge, begin to express the truth of your experience. When I see you,and recognize you,I say:"Ah,its you!"That's how it is.Previously your soul was trying to say something but you couldn't understand what it was.But now it cries out Abba,Father!(cf.Rom 8.15;Gal 4.6) and with those words you become a theologian; you discover that your mind is in God,that your word is God.You've captured God in the most delicate fibers of your heart and spirit.
Now you can understand and come to know God.and you can talk to Him.What more could you possibly desire? Now you understand that to know God means to taste God.The knowledge of God is my nourishment.I have eaten God.This is why, when the Holy Scriptures and the Church Fathers talk about the word of God,they say:"Eat and drink it"(cf.Mt4.4;Lk 4.4).

ΑΓ.
